This year 4 cadets and 2
staff from 878 (Highworth) Sqn took part in SPTA camp. We arrived at Knook camp
on the Southern Edge of Salisbury Plain at 9 o'clock in the morning on the Thursday, and stayed through till Tuesday afternoon. The
cadets were split into three cadres, basic, intermediate and advanced, based on
their skill level, and then began their training
Advanced Cadre
The camp started with a bit of classroom revision, but as soon
as that was finished off, the cadets were out onto the plain. Friday was spent
practicing observation skills, map reading, how to spot targets, and the fun (if
tiring) bit, reaction to effective enemy fire (simulated, of course!) This involved practicing how to
react to an ambush situation as a patrol, regroup and advance on the enemy -
great for building teamwork (as well as fitness!)
Saturday was spent on the range at Lyneham, unfortunately I
can't say that much about it because I wasn't there!
Sunday was a navigation and communications exercise on the
Plain, the cadets were given coded orders telling them to go to checkpoints,
which they then had to find. Although one team began by going off in completely
the wrong direction, it all seemed to go quite well.
Monday morning was the
start of the 24 hour exercise, I took a camera with me to record some of it for
you.

Cadets sort out their equipment and radios before setting off

Final preparation before setting off: put your make up on and
stick grass in your hat.... clever camouflage doesn't appear to have fooled the
cows though....
