878 (HIGHWORTH) SQN NCO SELECTION BOARD
spacer
On the 16th of February, 5 candidates for promotion from 878 sqn arrived at Lyneham for the first 878 Sqn NCO Selection Board. After a brief uniform inspection, the candidates got stuck straight in to the command tasks, which were particularly enjoyable due to all of the equipment being covered in frost!

The candidates - from left to right, Cpl Sharps, Cpl Bray, Cdt Johnson, Cdt Livall and Cpl Jones - attempt to retrieve a plastic barrel using only a plank and some rope, without touching the floor

During the first leaderless task, Cpl Jones and Cpl Sharps discuss how to cross to the next object when none of the planks are long enough to reach

After two tasks with no leader to get the candidates familiar with the rules of the tasks, each candidate then took charge of the whole group for one exercise each. This gave each candidate a chance to impress the Directing Staff (DS) with thier ability to lead.

Once everyone had completed their command task, there was time for a quick lunch and change in blue uniform, before the next task - an individual presentation. Each candidate had to speak for several minutes on one of five subjects, with just 30 minutes to prepare. Once the presentations were completed, it was out on to the drill square for a test of both personal drill, and for more senior candidates, their ability to take drill too.

After the drill test and uniform inspection, the cadets each had an individual interview with Fg Off Bowyer, Plt Off Johnson and WO Huband, before returning to the Squadron, leaving the DS with the tough job of deciding who made it!
